Joe Sousa

In the words of Joe: “I grew up in a non-churched, non-Christian home. I had no idea about anything spiritual or ever really heard anything about Jesus Christ as a child. When I was in 8th grade a friend of mine invited me to a winter camp with his church and it sounded like fun so I went. During one of the messages the speaker was talking about the crucifixion and the punishment Christ took upon Himself that I deserved and I gave my life to Christ that night. Some verses I learned at that camp like John 14:6 and Galatians 6:7 stick with me to this day.

Currently I am involved in the youth ministry at Faith Bible Church as a small group leader and have been involved with the youth ministry for all of my adult life so far. I started playing bass way back in 8th grade when I switched to the upright bass from the violin. My first bass guitar experience was around my sophomore or junior year when some friends needed a bass player for their band so I picked it up and taught myself how to play. I have played off and on since then and have been in the worship band for our church’s youth ministry for many years.

When Bob approached me last year with the idea of starting a band I jumped at the chance. Although I am not the most talented player in the world I knew that God could use what I do to impact people through music and this sounded like a great outlet for that. One of the greatest things about being in Modern Dissent is we are all friends first and band members second. It is great to have that encouragement, exhortation, and fellowship with some great brothers in Christ and we all know that those things come before music. It is also great to see how God has directed us and opened doors since we started and we can all see how He has worked every step of the way.

I have a pretty wide range of musical tastes but some of my favorite bands are R.E.M., U2, Pearl Jam, and Depeche Mode. Growing up in the 80s has also given me a liking for some of the great hair metal and hard rock bands like AC/DC, Def Leppard, Cinderella, Ratt, etc. but I also am a big fan of more of the euro inspired stuff like Pet Shop Boys, New Order, Lightning Seeds, and the like. I have even been know to enjoy some hip hop and country. Pretty much anything except most jazz.”
